Director & Stage Manager
My approach to stage work as a director is shaped by a passionate dedication to collaboration, inclusivity, and a belief in the transformative power of storytelling. My name is Lilyanne Schwarz-Peterson, and my venture into directing began as a student, where I directed and served as assistant director. Additionally, my experience extends to stage management, where I've worked both as a stage manager and as an assistant, gaining valuable insights into the intricacies of theatrical productions. Through these experiences, I've honed my own approach to the craft and have had the opportunity to gain insights from diverse directors.
At the heart of my directorial philosophy lies a profound commitment to personal responsibility, particularly fostering equality and providing a safe, embracive space for all collaborators. I believe it's crucial to promote fairness and create a welcoming environment for everyone involved. While I strive to ensure that everyone feels seen and valued in the production process, it's important to acknowledge the practical limitations. While I can't give everyone an equal voice in directing the play, I prioritize creating an environment where diverse perspectives are respected and valued.
Something I share with the theatre community is my unwavering belief in the power of theatre to inspire change and provoke introspection. Ideally my productions would transcend mere entertainment, diving into the depths of the human experience to provoke intense emotional and intellectual responses from audiences. Lately, my work has centered on themes of isolation, mirroring the intricate realities of today's society and urging audiences to confront their own truths. I believe theatre can make complex societal truths understandable, especially as isolation changes with modern technology.
As I evolve as a director, my goal is for my productions to tackle societal issues head-on. I put in the work to ensure that each show feels authentic and meaningful. By paying close attention to every detail, from the visuals to the actors' performances, I aim to make the audience feel like they're part of the story. Ultimately, I want my shows to stay with people long after they leave the theatre and resonate deeply with them.
In the warm glow of the stage lights, with the quiet hum of anticipation, my productions become vibrant displays of emotion and expression. Every performance is a team effort, where voices blend and ideas soar. We invite our audience to join us on a journey of exploration, delving into the depths of human emotions and embracing the potential for transformation.
There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
